About The Breed

The SA Vlaamperd is a rare and versatile South African breed known for its elegant movement, strength, and willing temperament. Originally developed from imported Friesian stallions crossed with local stock, the breed became especially valued as a driving horse. Vlaams are versatile horses. They are used for driving in pairs and large teams, as well as under saddle for pleasure riding and showing. The SA Vlaamperd Breeders’ Society was founded in 1983, and the studbook remains open, with foals evaluated before full registration. Most Vlaams are black or dark brown.
