The Flemish Horse (Vlaams Paard) is a rare Belgian draft horse breed with deep historical roots. Once a common working horse in Flanders, it nearly disappeared after mechanization in the mid-20th century. In the early 1990s, dedicated breeders traced surviving bloodlines to North America—particularly among Amish communities—where the original Flemish type had been preserved. Through these efforts, the breed was reintroduced to Belgium, and today around 1,200 Flemish Horses exist in Europe. Known for their strength, versatility, and kind temperament, they are used for riding, vaulting, driving, and traditional farm work.
