The Blazer breed started in 1967. All Blazer horses trace back to one founding sire, Little Blaze. He was a combination of Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, Morgan and Shetland. A man named Neil Hinck bred Little Blaze and then chose his foundation stock for the breed. He handpicked 15 mares by conformation and disposition only, then kept a closed herd for 50 years.
Blazer horses are efficient, standing only 13-15hh they are easy to care for, feed and maintain. They are versatile, and compete in extreme cowboy races, work cattle, and easily maneuver mountain trails because of their ability to balance so correctly. Blazers are durable, and are known to work well into their twenties without missing a beat! They are a very personable, people friendly breed and like to “Adopt their people.”
In this episode, I meet up with Diane Robson, a true mountain cowgirl who traverses the rugged terrain of cattle country in Montana with the help of a breed I hadn't even heard of before the Quest!
