In the late 1600s and early 1700s, three stallions were brought to England: the Byerley Turk, the Darley Arabian, and the Godolphin Arabian. Named after their owners, these three stallions became the foundation for a breed that is now one of the fastest in the world.
For hundreds of years, the horses were selectively bred for their speed and endurance. Pedigrees were meticulously documented, and as the name suggests, the horses were indeed "thoroughly bred." In the United States, the Jockey Club manages registration and maintains pedigrees, with some names tracing back to the late 1800s. The average height for Thoroughbreds at maturity is 15-17 hands. Colors include bay, black, chestnut, dark bay/brown, grey/roan, palomino, and white.
Although they were developed for racing, this popular breed excels in many different disciplines. From the trail to the Olympics, these amazing athletes continue to win the love of equestrians around the world.
In this episode I head to Kentucky to ride a very special horse! Join me as we visit the Kentucky Horse Park, Jonabell Farm and New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program!
