About The Breed

The Poitevin Mullassier comes from the Poitou region of western France and is one of three distinct breeds in the area. Developed centuries ago as a heavy draft horse for agriculture and forestry, it later became important for mule production when crossed with the Baudet du Poitou donkey, giving rise to the Mullassier type. Known for its tall, elegant build, calm and placid temperament, and versatility, the Poitevin Mullassier excels in forestry, agricultural work, driving, and leisure riding. With only around 60 foals born per year, it is considered an endangered breed. Its distinctive appearance and gentle nature make it stand out at horse gatherings, and it remains a living symbol of the Poitou region’s equestrian tradition.
