The Delta Horse is a rare Italian breed that lives in the wetlands of the Po River Delta in northern Italy. Its origins trace back to the early 1970s, when breeder Baltiero Mazzoni imported six Camargue horses from southern France and began breeding them on the coastal marshlands south of Venice. Over time, the horses adapted to their new environment, developing a slightly taller build while retaining the hardy, calm nature of their French ancestors. Officially recognized as an Italian breed in 2003, the Delta Horse is known for its intelligence, sociable temperament, and surefootedness in wet terrain. They live semi-wild, graze in the marshes, and are used for equestrian tourism programs that introduce riders of all levels to the beauty of Italy’s delta region.
