Originating from the Brittany region of France, the Breton is a powerful and versatile draft horse known for its strength, endurance, and calm temperament. Traditionally used for heavy farm work and forestry, the breed comes in two main types: the heavier Trait Breton and the lighter Postier Breton, the latter developed for faster draft work and riding. Bretons typically stand between 15.2 to 16.2 hands high and have a muscular build with a broad chest and strong legs. Their coat colors are most often chestnut, bay, or roan. Valued for their willingness and durability, Bretons have also contributed genetically to other draft breeds worldwide. Today, they continue to work in agriculture, forestry, and driving, and are increasingly popular in leisure riding and driving disciplines.
