#1. Their Story Starts With a Fence.
In the early 1950's a fence was put up around the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Horses that were living in the area ended up being accidentally fenced in.
#2. They Are a Piece of American History.
Thought to Trace Back to Sitting Bull's War Ponies, the ancestors of the breed include early Native American and Frontier ranch horses.
#3. The Name, "Nokota®" Refers to Their Origins.
They come from the southwest corner of North Dakota.
#4. Two Brothers Saved The Breed.
In the 1980's Frank and Leo Kuntz started buying horses from the National Park Service round ups in order to prevent the horses from going to slaughter.
#5. The Nokota Horse Conservancy is Working to Preserve the Breed's Future.
Linton, North Dakota is home to the Conservancy, where they have a breeding herd of over 70 Nokota horses.
#6. The Official Breed Registry Was Formed in 1999.
