The Lipica Stud Farm is the original stud farm of the Lipizzaner horse. It is located in Sežana, Slovenia.
I was seven years old when I first saw the World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions perform. Two decades later, I arrived at the birthplace of the breed itself.
After touring the farm, we were introduced to one of the head trainers. He was our guide for the day. A passionate ambassador for the Lipizzaner breed, and the mastermind behind one of the best rides I have ever been on. I was shown to a stall with a majestic white horse inside. Where I promptly fell in love with a Lipizzaner mare named Slava.
Next step was the riding hall for evaluation. The ancient indoor arena was part museum and part masterpiece. The soft thump of Slava's hoofbeats gave me goosebumps as I pictured all of the riders that had been there before me.
After proving that my husband and I could, in fact, stay on the right side of the horse, we left the magical arena and rode down the main boulevard of the estate. The tree lined route was shaded with large centenary trees and lined with white wooden fences. Lipizzaner mares and foals were on the other side of the fence grazing lazily, occasionally lifting a head to look at the trio trotting past them.
We turned onto a path that lead us into a rolling meadow. We cantered over the hills along the borders of the 400 year old estate. It felt as if time had stopped in those perfect moments of pure bliss.
We left the estate grounds and rode into the forested Karst region. Striking white limestone rock walls were covered in bright green moss. I half expected to see a white gnome peeking out from behind one. A 300 year old shepherds hut was off to the side of the trail, still waterproof to this day.
