About The California Vaquero Horse:

1769: Spanish missions became known for producing well bred Spanish horses.

1830-1848: Thousands of Spanish horses were traded for goods and furs. They traveled to their new homes on a route that became known as, β€œThe Old Spanish Trail.” Large numbers of these horses escaped or were stolen.

1980: Forty miles away from the Old Spanish Trail a group of special wild horses was discovered.

1997: Genetic testing proved that they were indeed Spanish horses. They are considered critically endangered with less than 100 known individuals worldwide. Typically standing 14.0-14.2hh. Dun and grulla coloring is most commonly seen.

2018: To honor the past and to help preserve their future a bill was introduced that could make them the official state horse of California.
